I took inspiration from the style of the writing – magical realism to create mystical illustrations for the slightly older, or even adult, readership of this book. I also felt Owen Gent’s illustration style was also the perfect reference for this work, as it is ethereal, moody and minimalist. I tend to focus on the detail in my work, but here, in keeping with my reference, I needed to create drama with composition and scale and keep it as abstract as possible.
